“Sweatpants, hair tied, chilling with no makeup on. That’s when you’re the prettiest. I hope you don’t take that wrong.” It’s not that I take it wrong, Drake, it’s just that I don’t know if I believe you or all of the other guys who say stuff like this.
I get it if you don’t want to kiss and mess up my matte Ruby Woo lipstick. But do guys even notice a little foundation covering up my ruddy acne spots? Heck, do guys even notice a little mascara, a little blush, a little eyeliner, etc?
I once spent 20-minutes perfecting a “no-makeup” makeup look before heading to a guy friend’s house. Coincidentally, he brought up how he liked low maintenance girls who wear no makeup, like his girlfriend. My guy friend gestured toward me and said, “Look how pretty you look without makeup!” This was an LOL moment.
I occasionally see a guy who claims he hates makeup. However, every time he sees me done up, he says, “You look pretty!”
People want to love things that pure and natural. They want to have natural, drug-free childbirths. They want to eat organic food. They want girls to be pretty without makeup.
A couple months ago, I Instagrammed a photo of myself with a fresh haircut and “natural makeup.” I was wearing foundation, finishing powder, lip liner, lip balm, along with my semi-permanent eyelash extensions. Hundreds of my followers commented on how much they loved toned down look. I liked my look that day too, but no more or no less than my other makeup looks. And to the nasty commenters that “joked” that four/five products isn’t considered “natural makeup,” then what the hell is to you?! Lip Smackers?!
All these comments and claims that chicks are prettiest natural inspired me to conduct an informal experiment. I posted the following four photos on Facebook and asked males to vote/like their favorite photo.
Constants: My face. No smiles.
According to what men say my hypothesis should read: If men do indeed like the natural look the most, then the photo of me without makeup will be the highest liked photo on Facebook. But we all know what men say they like and what they respond to can be so very different.

Analysis: I’m wearing a good amount of makeup in the highest liked photo. This selfie was taken before going to a One Direction concert. This makeup look was intended to get Harry Style’s attention. The least popular photo features similarly heavy eye makeup, but with red lipstick. This confirms my thoughts that men don’t like a heavy, non-kissable pouts. The second ranked photo features clean, natural makeup. The 3rd liked photo is sans makeup.
In conclusion, men like makeup, but they don’t know it. They are ignorant/oblivious to how much makeup you’re actually wearing, unless you’re wearing a bright color. So, save bold lip colors and colored eyeliners for girl’s night.
As a true pisces, I live in a magical and delusional land in my head. In this world romances unfold the way they do in romantic comedies, everything at Sephora is free, Shake Shake burgers are a diet food, and we have the capability to clone Harry Styles.
In real life (what's that?), I spend my days pondering how Kylie Jenner's face changed so much. I'm a beauty junkie and pop culture-loving wedding videographer and freelance journalist. I have a Princess Jasmine complex. I am a Fanson (die hard Hanson fan). I enjoy belting old Celine Dion songs.
Please take everything I say seriously (I have my Masters in journalism from Syracuse University), but not too seriously (Cosmo is my favorite publication.)
